WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. (WTVQ) – The long-anticipated Ark Encounter opened to the public Thursday morning, drawing enthusiasts and believers, but also protestors who say the attraction promotes an immoral message.
At least nine groups are protesting the grand opening. One of them, a group called “Tri-State Freethinkers,” calls the Ark Encounter “anti-science,” and even tried to erect a billboard outside the attraction, saying it was an “incest and genocide” park.
The group also says the park’s organizers engage in discriminatory hiring practices, all while receiving up to $18 million dollars in state tax incentives.
Despite the controversy, Answers in Genesis – the Christian organization that built the ark – says it expects large crowds for years to come.
A statement from Mark Looy, Chief Communications Officer of Answers in Genesis, reads “We hope the people who are against this family attraction will take the opportunity to tour the Ark for themselves and learn what we really teach. We welcome skeptics and hope that as they tour the Ark, they will consider our worldview.”
