LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) -Lexington’s annual Bluegrass 10K is set for 7:30 a.m. on July 4th, and the competition just got a little bit hotter.
Lexington firefighters will be running the race in full protective gear to raise awareness about firefighter health and safety.
About a dozen firefighters will make up the team, wearing gear that can weigh upwards of 75 pounds, including breathing apparatus.
Captain Jordan Saas, who will be leading the team says he “wants to inspire and encourage other firefighters to stay in shape and to promote better fitness and wellness.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association 59% of firefighter deaths in 2015 were the result of overexertion, stress and other medical related issues.
Lexington Fire Chief Kristin Chilton says that, “Physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle are important to anyone, but are critical to those in our profession.”
