SOMERSET, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Pulaski Co. Sheriff is warning homeowners in the area that an investigation has begun into a blacktopping scam in the area.
According to the Sheriff, a person came to a home saying they had leftover blacktop, and offered to pave the homeowners driveway or road. The Sheriff says the person in this case is a very high-pressure salesman, who wouldn’t give the homeowner a price until after spreading blacktop on part of the pavement. At that point, the Sheriff says, the scammer quoted an inordinately high price. The Sheriff says the homeowner in this case gave the person a partial payment, at which time the person told the homeowner they expected full payment by the end of the day.
Fortunately, in this instance, the Sheriff was at the home when the person showed back up. That person has been identified, according to the Sheriff.
The Sheriff is warning everyone of these scams, and urging homeowners to be wary of these kinds of visitors. The Sheriff also says that these kinds of scams tend to target the elderly.
Anyone who has any information, or who has been contacted by a person wanting to blacktop their drive or walkway is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (606) 678-5145.
