WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTVQ) – Sixth District Congressman Andy Barr, of Lexington, led a moment of silence on the U.S. House floor Tuesday evening to honor Lexington native Stephanie Shults and her husband, Justin Shults, of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Congressman Barr was joined by Congressman Phil Roe and Congressman Jim Cooper of Tennessee.
The young couple, who met at graduate school at Vanderbilt, were killed in the recent terror attacks in Belgium. They had just dropped Stephanie’s mother off at the airport in Brussels after a stay when the attacks took place. Stephanie’s mother survived the blast, but the couple was killed.
Stephanie Shults was a graduate of Bryan Station High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Transylvania University in Lexington before getting her Master’s at Vanderbilt.
The Shults’ had moved to Brussels about a year and a half ago to work for their respective companies.
The visitation and funeral were held in Lexington last week. A separate memorial service was held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee last weekend.
