2 arrested for stealing from cars in Madison Co.

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – Police in Richmond say two men have been arrested after being caught with a backpack full of items stolen from cars.

Officers say they received a call just before 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, reporting two men checking parked cars for unlocked doors on Hampton Way.

Police say when they arrived, they found the two men with a flashlight behind a home.  As they approached, officers say they saw the two placing items in a backpack.  Upon further investigation, police say they discovered the backpack was full of items stolen from cars in the area, including loose change, GPS units, wallets, sungalsses, knives, car stereos, MP3 player, and more.

The value of the stolen items is estimated to be just shy of $1,500 dollars.

Police arrested Benjamin C. Johnson (pictured,) and David W. Pelfry, both 21.  No mugshot for Pelfry is available.

Both men were charged with theft by unlawful taken, and taken to the Madison Co. Detention Center.
