BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) – The city of Bowling Green is changing its Section 8 housing voucher program to provide more housing options for the area’s homeless population.

The Bowling Green Daily News reports the city has been allocating some of its Section 8 vouchers to the homeless, and March 1 approved expanding that effort. Section 8 is a federal program that pays a portion of housing costs for low-income families and individuals.

Previously, a percentage of vouchers had been going to homeless living in either The Salvation Army or Barren River Area Safe Space Shelters. The change now allows vouchers to be issued to homeless referred by two other agencies – HOTEL INC and LifeSkills.

Homeless individuals and families referred by the agencies can be put at the top of the voucher waiting list.
