LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington police were in an hours-long standoff with a man who barricaded himself in a business Wednesday.
It started at around 10:30 p.m. Police say they tried to make a traffic stop on what they believed was a stolen vehicle.
They say the driver drove to Pat’s Corner Liquor on Georgetown Street, got out of the car and ran inside. Police say there were employees in the store at the time. They said one of them jumped out a window to escape, and another hid in a beer cooler for over an hour.
The man barricaded himself in the store and police say he could be seen holding a gun to his own head. Police say he has at least two handguns on him.
Police were in contact with the man for most of the night. Just before 6 on Thursday morning, they were able to enter the building and arrest him without further incident.
“I stepped away, and I went and prayed, and that’s kinda what happened to me, just an overwhelming sense of gratitude, that at that point all my employees were out, this guy still hadn’t done himself in, the police were doing a great job, and the police were gonna see it through. And the guy walked outta here in handcuffs but alive. I guess, if there was a better outcome than that, it woulda been that it never happened,” confided Patrick O’Neil, owner of the store.
Caldwell faces multiple charges, including reckless driving, wanton endangerment, and criminal mischief. Police report he will likely be arraigned tomorrow.
