Kentucky Democrats get help from Obama in special elections

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Democrats in Kentucky got help from an unlikely place ahead of the special House elections: President Barack Obama.

Obama recorded a phone message for voters in Hopkinsville urging them to vote for fellow Democrat Jeffrey Taylor. Taylor would go on to win by more than 1,000 votes, one of three Democratic victories on Tuesday night that solidified the party’s hold on the state House of Representatives.

Kentucky Democrats have famously shunned the president because of his dismal approval ratings in the Bluegrass State. On Wednesday, no one would take credit for contacting Obama and asking him to record the message. Democratic Party chairwoman Sannie Overly said she was thankful for Obama’s involvement.

House Republican Leader Jeff Hoover said Republicans would likely remind voters of Obama’s involvement in the November elections.
