FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – A bill aimed at putting new restrictions on abortion clinics has overwhelmingly passed the Kentucky Senate.

It’s the latest in a flurry of abortion-related measures to pass the Republican-led Senate this year.

The bill that passed on a 32-5 vote Wednesday would require abortion clinics to meet stricter, outpatient surgical center standards. It also would require the clinics to obtain a certificate of need from the state.

Another provision would require doctors at abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at local hospitals.

Sen. Albert Robinson says the bill requires abortion clinics to meet basic standards to ensure patient care.

In voting against it, Sen. Reginald Thomas called it the “abortion bill of the week” in the Senate.

The bill heads to the House.
