LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Saturday marks 12 years since the death of a Lexington firefighter in the line of duty.
Lt. Brenda Cowan made waves in the Lexington Fire Department, becoming the first female African-American to join its ranks. Unfortunately she also became the first female African-American to die in the line of duty for the Lexington Fire Department.
Officers say Cowan was responding to a domestic violence situation and looking to help a wife who’d been shot by her husband. They say the man was holed up inside the home and shot Cowan as she tried to help the victim.
Cowan died from her injuries.
