French Alps Avalanche kills 5 soldiers during training


PARIS (AP) – It was a military unit of 50 men, swept away by an avalanche that injured three, and killed five of their teammates, according to AP sources.

Julien Noel, director of the ski area, told the Associated Press the location is well-known for back country skiing and normally is not known as particularly dangerous. He said the slopes were closed after the avalanche Monday, for safety.

The deadly avalanche comes just days after a school group also skiing off the established trails in the Alps was swept away, killing a Ukrainian tourist and two students.
