LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Laurel Co. Sheriff says a grandmother has been arrested, after she drank too much and called 911 and asked to have her grandchildren removed.
The Sheriff says they were contacted by Laurel 911 dispatch about a woman that had called, asking the Sheriff’s Department to remove children from her home. Deputies went to the home on Maple Graves School Road just after 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday to investigate. When they got there, deputies say no one would come to the door. Two children reportedly told the deputies that the woman in the home had drunk a bottle of alcohol, and then told them to get out of the residence.
Deputies were finally able to get the woman to come to the door, and learned that 49-year-old Ruth Marcum had drank a fifth of vodka. They say they also found a boy and girl in the home, and were able to determine they were Marcum’s grandchildren. Deputies say the mother of the children was in the hospital, and the kids had been left in the care of their grandmother. Deputies say the heat in the home wasn’t working properly, and that Marcum was using a stove to provide additional warmth.
According to the Sheriff, social services was called, and the children were taken to be with their Aunt. Marcum was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and alcohol intoxication.
She was taken to the Laurel Co. Detention Center.
