BEAVER DAM, Ky. (AP) – A date has been set for an alcohol sales referendum in Beaver Dam.
The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/1RjZWay ) city residents will have the chance to weigh in on local option sales Feb. 2.
Judge-Executive David Johnston and county clerk Bess Tichenor Ralph recently verified signatures on a petition calling for the election.
Beaver Dam resident Michael Adkins said he collected and turned in about 450 signatures in November, but Ralph said only 274 of those signatures were verified.
To hold an election, a petition must reflect at least 25 percent of those who voted in the last general election.
Early reports had indicated that Adkins would need 300 verified signatures to compel a referendum, but Ralph said low voter turnout during last month’s election actually lowered the bar.
