SOMERSET, Ky. (WTVQ) – Police in Somerset are on high alert because they say a skimmer has appeared at several of their local banks.
A skimmer is a device that steals information from a bank card’s magnetic strip. Investigators have released photos of a woman they say put a skimmer on an ATM at Cumberland Security Bank and another one at Community Trust Bank on November 15.
The following are tips to help you protect your funds at ATMs:
Police ask that ATM users inspect the card reader before inserting their card. If the card reader is damaged, crooked, loose or comes off, call the police department.
ATM users should also inspect the card readers for any scratches, tape or residue. If you see any of these problems, you should not use the machine.
When entering your ATM pin, block the keypad with your other hand to prevent hidden cameras from recording your number.
ATMs at an inside location are safer because criminals have less access to install the skimmers.
Avoid ATMs in tourist areas if possible. They are a popular target for skimming.
If your card is not returned after a transaction or hitting “cancel,” immediately contact your financial institution.
