LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Laurel County Constable’s cruiser collided with a stolen pickup truck during a pursuit Wednesday afternoon, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say it all began with a 911 call from a man who says he saw what he thought was his friend’s pickup that had been stolen the day before in London.
Laurel County Constable Bobby Smith says he saw a pickup matching the description of the stolen truck on East Pittsburgh Church road, just north of London. He says the pickup didn’t have a license plate on it. Investigators say Constable Smith turned on his emergency lights and siren and tried to pull the driver over, but the pickup driver took off and the pursuit was on.
Investigators say at one point during the chase along US 25, the pickup was being driven so recklessly it nearly hit oncoming traffic. The pickup eventually turned onto Glenn View Road and had traveled about a quarter of a mile when the driver lost control in a sharp curve and collided with the pursuing Constable’s cruiser, according to investigators. They say no one was hurt.
Constable Smith along with Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies and London city police officers arrested the pickup truck driver, 31-year old Joshua Caldwell of London. Investigators say he was charged with numerous traffic offenses, auto theft, wanton endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia, trafficking and possession of a controlled substance-methamphetamine and other charges.
In addition, investigators say Caldwell is wanted on numerous outstanding warrants out of Garrard County that include charges of assault, domestic violence, child sex abuse and a separate parole violation warrant out of Laurel County regarding a conviction of assault. Caldwell was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
Investigators say a yellow four wheeler ATV that was in the back of the pickup truck when it was stolen, was not in the truck during the pursuit. The ATV has not been located, according to investigators.
