WINCHESTER, Ky., (WTVQ) – On Wednesday, Nov. 25, the Gladie Visitor Center in the Red River Gorge will close for the winter season.
Visitor information for the gorge, including maps, passes and firewood permits, will be available at the nearby Stanton office, Morehead office and Winchester office of the Daniel Boone National Forest.
“We have very few visitors at the center during the winter months, and the U.S. Forest Service wants to make sure that we are using our limited resources to provide for public services during the spring, summer, and fall when more people are visiting,” said District Ranger Jon Kazmierski, Cumberland Ranger District. “Additionally, the road to Gladie can be hazardous for travel in the winter, and we frequently have problems with loss of power and phones.
“Our employees will report to the Stanton office while Gladie is closed, so visitors are welcome to come to Stanton for information or other services.”
The Stanton office is located at 705 West College Ave in Stanton, Ky., across from Powell County High School. The public may call 606-663-0576, ext. 150 for more information. The office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The center will reopen to the public in early March.
