FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – An environmental group has filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the state from implementing regulations that allow more electronic billboards along the highways and let billboard owners cut trees on public land that block their advertisements.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports (http://bit.ly/1Ps2qRS) that attorney Tom FitzGerald filed the lawsuit Thursday on behalf of Scenic Kentucky, which wants the new billboard regulations overturned.

The regulations cleared their last legislative hurdle Thursday. The Transportation Cabinet had worked on them for nearly three years.

Scenic Kentucky executive director Paul Bergmann says the regulations would clutter the state with more billboards, distract drivers and lower property values.

The billboard industry says that the proposed regulations would decrease the number of billboards in the state and that vegetation would be removed in an environmentally responsible way.
