Portion of U.S. 127 named after fallen Kentucky officer


HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ)- A Harrodsburg officer killed in the line of duty in 1998 was memorialized in Mercer County this weekend.

Officer Regina Nickles was on duty when she was killed in October 1998. Sunday, years after her tragic death, a portion of U.S. 127 in Mercer County was renamed. Driver headed on the highway from the Anderson County line to the norther city limits in Harrodsburg will now be driving on “Officer Regina Nickles Memorial Highway”.

Organizers spoke about how loved Nickles was in the community and looked back on a time when she ran for Mercer County Sheriff. Current sheriff, Ernie Kelty knew Officer Nickles and spoke about her dedication to the force and how the night her life was lost, she was saving the lives of others.

Officer Nickles’ daughter, Brandellin made the trip from Phoenix to see the dedication made. The ceremony was held at the McAfee Fire Station in Harrodsburg.
