UK’s freshman class exceeds 5,000 for second straight year

HAZARD, Ky. (AP) – The University of Kentucky’s freshman class has surpassed 5,000 students for the second straight year.

UK officials say this year’s freshman class is the most diverse and academically prepared class in school history.

The Lexington Herald-Leader ( ) reports the freshman class brings UK’s total enrollment to 30,704. It’s the second straight year enrollment has exceeded 30,000 students.

For the 5,217 students who entered this fall, the average ACT score was 25.5 and the average GPA was 3.68. There are 117 National Merit Scholars.

The freshman class has 560 black students – more than 10 percent of incoming freshmen – and 265 Hispanic students.

Out-of-state students make up 38 percent of the freshman class, the highest in UK history.

Enrollment numbers were presented Friday at the UK Board of Trustees meeting in Hazard.
