The opening ceremony included an appearances by the Bobby Perry Band, as well as Special Olympics athlete and national singing sensation Marlana VanHoose.
Organizers say some competitions were held Friday night, including swimming relays, the 100-meter wheelchair race and the 1,500 and 5,000-meter races.
This is the 45th anniversary of the Special Olympics in Kentucky. It’s also the 21st year the games are at EKU. Organizers say more than 600 volunteers from throughout Kentucky will help with the summer games, which run through Sunday.
