LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Friday morning, LG&E and KU announced the launch of their new Outage Texting tool, to aid in severe weather preparedness.
The tool will allow customers to report their own power outages, say authorities, as well as request text updates about their power status.
Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company say they are on board about adding another key tool to enhance their communication with customers during outages and restoration.
Officials say that once a customer’s information is confirmed up-to-date, they can report an outage by texting OUTAGE to 454358, or STATUS to the same number, for an update.
To take advantage of this new feature, customers are advised by KU to make sure their mobile number is registered as an approved Outage Reporting Number in LG&E-KU’s database. For convenience, they also say an interested customer should save that number into their phone, so they have it on hand next time an outage occurs.

LG&E-KU says this service is not meant to report gas leaks, downed power lines, or other emergencies. Officials say that a downed power line or gas leak should be reported to (502) 589-1444. In the event of a Gas leak, KU adds, people should immediately evacuate the area for their own safety.
