MERCER COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Mercer County Fire Department has temporarily called off its search for 30 year old Mike McCarty, who went missing on the Kentucky River on Sunday evening and is presumed dead, according to authorities. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife says it will continue to search over the next few days, and the Mercer County Fire Department says it will return with search dogs another day.
McCarty’s mother, Bessie Rhinehimer says: “At this point I just want his body found so that we can put him to rest.”
McCarty reportedly flipped off the back of a jet ski he was a passenger on, around 6 p.m. on Sunday. The driver says he was initially unaware that McCarty had fallen off, but witnesses gave the fire department enough information to narrow the search to an area near the Mercer-Jessamine county line.
Searchers say McCarty was familiar with the water, and had spent most of his life around the river, but was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
