Lexington father catches burglar, defends family

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Court documents say a man who tried to steal from a Lexington family was caught Thursday morning, but it was not by the police.
The homeowner, Kunté Hayes, says he walked into his garage around 4:30 a.m. and saw someone moving in the passenger seat of one of their cars. "I called out my wife’s name to be sure it wasn’t her, but I had just left her upstairs," says Hayes.
He says when he yelled, the man ran off.  Hayes says he chased him to Oakhurst Lane, the street in front of their home. He says there was a slight struggle before he brought the man to the ground.
His wife Shaheen says at first when she looked out, she was afraid it was her husband who was on the ground.  However, it was Johnny Lee Bruner, the man police arrested on burglary charges.
"The officers say they told him, he probably picked the wrong house," says Bruner.  "You know you feel violated.  I think any father wants to protect his family and would’ve done the same thing."
Bruner is scheduled to be arraigned at 1 p.m.
