The Kentucky Wildcats may be burning up the court during March Madness, but if fans plan on burning couches, the fire department wants them to rethink their actions. Wednesday crews passed out fliers with the acronym CHAMPS to remind Solid Blue fans to act responsibly.

CHAMPS stands for the following: celebrate with class, have fun but be safe, act responsibly, move if you sense danger, prepare yourself and start a new and responsible tradition. They also recommend anyone heading out to State Street, a former epicenter for March Madness celebration, to wear closed toe or tennis shoes.

University of Kentucky student Jake Bertram says he knows why firefighters are asking this. He was at the State Street celebrations last year. "There are people standing around, throwing bottles. It can hit someone in the head. The bottle can break and someone can slice their foot open," says Bertram.

He also says he believes there will be couches burned and other ruckus despite the city’s efforts. The fire department handed out fliers from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the State Street area and the Woodland Avenue area from 12 to 2 p.m.
