Child hit & killed by school bus in Whitley County

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – A 10-year old boy in Whitley County was hit by his school bus and killed as he returned home from school Monday afternoon, according to the Whitley County sheriff.

State Police identified the boy as Jonathan A. Chatham, of Rockholds.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  Sheriff Colan Harrell says one or both of the child’s parents were waiting for him and saw him get hit.  Harrell called the wreck "pure accident" and says the bus driver was distraught afterward and was taken to an area hospital.  State Police say alcohol and drug use is not suspected at this time.

State Police say the bus driver stopped to let four students off at a stop, including Chatham.  Sheriff Harrell says Chatham cleared the school bus, but somehow went into a ditch line and came back under the wheels.  State Police say the boy was hit as the bus began to drive away.  A Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement officer says Chatham attended North Whitley Elementary School.
