Two voting rights advocates laid on the ground outside of the committee room Wednesday, while others stood around them singing "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize," a folk song used during the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
The bill passed the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, but it has stalled in the Republican-controlled Senate. The last scheduled meeting of the Senate State and Local Government Committee, where the bill had been assigned, was Wednesday.
Lawmakers have until Monday to pass bills.
