CADIZ, Ky. (AP) — A contract has been awarded to build a new bridge over Lake Barkley in western Kentucky in a $128.3 million project.

Gov. Steve Beshear’s office said in a news release the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awarded the contract to PCL Civil Construction of Denver. The four-lane bridge will carry U.S. 68-Kentucky 80 over Lake Barkley and will be the eastern entrance to Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.

The bridge will replace the Henry Lawrence Memorial Bridge at Canton. The news release said that bridge, built in 1932, doesn’t meet modern design standards.

The Lake Bridges Project also includes separate replacement of the Eggners Ferry Bridge on Kentucky Lake. Work on that bridge is underway.

The project will provide a four-lane route from Aurora to Cadiz.
