Helm was the first superintendent to spend her first morning at the school’s bus garages.
She spent time with the hundreds of bus drivers and monitors before they left and after they returned from their morning routes.
Helm said, "I thought it was important to come out and greet the drivers and the monitors and to express appreciation for their interactions that they have with the students, and for their nurturing care and making sure they arrive safely at school."
She then went to Breckinridge Elementary, where she started her career as a science and reading teacher.
Visiting schools is how Helm plans to start each day of her new job.
Helm said, "I think starting the day at a school helps you to remember and helps you to stay focused on what this is all about. It’s all about kids, and it’s all about making sure they have an incredible educational experience."
Helm said she will continue to oversee the district’s school construction projects, redistricting, and fulfill her other duties until a permanent superintendent is hired.
She served as the interim superintendent once before in 2004.
Her current contract runs through the end of June 2015, but can be extended if a permanent replacement has not been found yet for Dr. Tom Shelton.
