Trial Date Set In Case of Man Killed By Lincoln County School Bus

A July trial date has been set for the civil lawsuit of the family of William Otis Coleman, a man who was struck and killed by a Lincoln County school bus last May.

The family of Coleman is suing Lincoln County Public Schools superintendent Karen Hatter, bus driver Judy Asbery, and former transportation director Ronnie Deatherage.

Depositions for witnesses in the case will take place in November.

Police said the bus Asbery was driving hit Coleman’s vehicle. He died ten days later, according to Boyd Jr. Coleman, the victim’s brother.

"The holidays are going to be really hard. It’ll be our first Christmas without him," said Coleman.

Coleman’s attorney, Tim Bates, said his inspector found the bus’s brakes to be faulty before the crash. School officials disagree.

Bates is asking for names of people who complained about Asbery’s driving to be released. He said he already has the documents.

Discoveries from both sides will be used as evidence in the trial set for July 6 in Lincoln County.

The next status conference will be January 9.
