Kentucky lawmaker to appear in court Nov. 5

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky lawmaker and a former mine reclamation inspector are scheduled to make their first court appearance after being charged with bribery on Nov. 5.

A federal court in Pikeville issued the summonses for state Democratic Rep. Keith Hall of Phelps and former state mine reclamation inspector Kelly Shortridge. The two were indicted by a federal grand jury in London, Kentucky on Thursday and charged in what prosecutors describe as a scheme to cover up violations at Hall’s mines in eastern Kentucky.

The indictment will not affect the November election, since Hall lost the May primary by 209 votes to fellow Democrat Chris Harris. Harris is running unopposed in November for the seat representing the Pike County district in the state’s Appalachian region.
