Jarad McCargo, 36, was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to report an accident and leaving the scene of an accident, court documents said.
According to police, McCargo was parallel parked in front of The Beer Trappe on Euclid Avenue, when he put his car into reverse and slammed into the front of the bar, just after 11:00 p.m. Friday.
"A white-colored Ford Expedition backed over the curb at a high rate of speed, struck a male subject seated at a café table in front of the business, and then drove into the front of the building," Lexington Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said. "The vehicle was then observed fleeing on Euclid Ave toward downtown."
The man seated at the table was critically injured in the crash, police said. They were transported to University of Kentucky Hospital.
Police said McCargo then drove off from the scene and parked in the 3100 block of Yellowstone Parkway. Police later found the vehicle and arrested McCargo at the home.
As investigators began speaking to witnesses they found the passenger of the vehicle, who returned to the scene," Roberts said. She jumped out of the vehicle as the driver was fleeing. She was transported to Central Baptist Hospital for minor injuries.
According to Public Safety Commissioner Clay Mason, “Firefighter McCargo has been placed on administrative leave”.
Roberts said the Lexington Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
