Keeneland Debuts New Dirt Track

The track at Keeneland has been closed for three months’ worth of construction, but Thursday the track and its new surface reopened for trainers.

Keeneland spent the past few months tearing out its old synthetic polytrak that’s around seven years old.  It switched in 2006 from an old dirt track.

The new dirt surface is made out of sand, silt and clay, mostly from Northern Kentucky.

The track also has a new drainage system.

Keeneland decided to replace its old track, although synthetic tracks are statistically safer, because many owners prefer dirt to polytrak.

The track hopes this will help to attract a larger number of quality horses to Keeneland.

Riders said the surface is smooth and even.
