In Fayette County about 21,000 students get free or reduced lunch according to the school system. That’s more than half the district’s enrollment.
This summer FCPS, God’s Pantry and Fresh Approach are teaming together to make sure all kids can eat healthy this summer.
“The children are not necessarily starving because they’re eating food but its junk food that does not have the nutritional value,” said Walt Barbour, director of Fresh Approach.
“It just provides an opportunity through the summer to assist those families and to make sure the kids are growing,” said Michelle Coker, director of child nutrition for Fayette County Public Schools.
The program starts Monday and plans to feed about 4,000 kids each day.
The free meals in the summer are open to all students under the age of 18, not just those who get free or reduced lunch during the school year.
