Each Presidential Scholar was offered the opportunity to name his or her most influential teacher.

Kern chose Dunbar High School Teacher Eric Furr.

Furr will be recognized through a personal letter from the Secretary of Education.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was created in 1964.

Since then, it has honored more than 6,500 students across the country.
