Paul Laurence Dunbar High School Senior Athena Kern was recognized for outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service, and contribution to school and community.
Kern was among 141 American high school seniors awarded the prestigious recognition.
The scholars will be honored in Washington D.C. in June.
Each Presidential Scholar was offered the opportunity to name his or her most influential teacher.
Kern chose Dunbar High School Teacher Eric Furr.
Furr will be recognized through a personal letter from the Secretary of Education.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was created in 1964.
Since then, it has honored more than 6,500 students across the country.
