Heroin use in Kentucky has been called an epidemic.
The Fayette County Coroner says there were 22 heroin-related deaths in the county in 2012. Last year that number doubled to 44 and the coroner’s office said there have already been ten heroin overdose deaths this year with 13 others that could be heroin-related.
But help is out there.
The Hope Center’s Recovery Program for men has 1,787 graduates who have successfully completed the program on the road to overcoming a drug or alcohol addiction.
Logan said he was lucky and doctors were able to revive him. That was the moment he needed to turn his life around. He’s one of the graduates from the recovery program and now helps other addicts as a peer mentor.
“Overdose happens all the time and not always does it kill you but sometimes it does and sometimes you wake up and sometimes you don’t,” said Logan.
The recovery program is taught to addicts by former addicts. Logan said it isn’t easy but it can be done.
“It’s absolutely possible but you have to truly be done,” said Logan.
