A fire puts most of a Lexington strip mall out of business.
The people who work in the fire damaged strip on mall will be out of a job this Christmas, and the businesses in it won’t be making any money either.
Firefighters said they hadn’t been able to investigate, because it wasn’t safe for them to go inside.
Livelihoods, jobs, and dollars burn. A battalion chief guessed the fire caused $500,000 worth of damage.
When the fire department arrived, they said they only saw smoke. Then, flames shot through the roof. Firefighters called for more units, which led to a second alarm.
A ladder on one of the fire trucks was damaged by fire and had to be taken out of service.
The fire forced every business in the strip mall to close.
Fire investigators worried the wall could fall at any time. Most of the roof above a dollar store and neighboring restaurant fell in. But investigators worried the heating unit could drop on them.
The investigators needed heavy equipment to take the wall down and remove the debris.
The equipment’s wasn’t coming this weekend, and with Christmas on Wednesday, investigators weren’t sure when it would come in.
