30-year-old William McKenzie, is charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of his two-month-old daughter, Ava Grace McKenzie.
According to police and fire officials, units were called to the home on the 1400 block for the unresponsive infant around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. The child was transported to UK Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
According to court documents, McKenzie admitted to police that he wrapped his daughter’s face in a way that impeded the child’s breathing. The child suffocated, according to a release by the Fayette County Coroner.
The child’s mother had previously warned McKenzie that wrapping the child’s head in a blanket carried the risk of suffocation, police say.
McKenzie is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
