Police said in the first scam, people are contacted by phone through an automated system posing as the debit card company’s "Fraud Monitoring Department".
The automated phone message tells the person that their debit card has been compromised and instructs the person to enter their debit card number, effectively stealing it right over the phone.
The phone number showing up on Caller I.D. is 559-5, according to Police.
The second scam also includes a phone call. In this scheme, an automated message tells the person "Your debit card has been suspended. Press 1 to speak with a representative."
Upon contact with the bogus representative, the card information is requested.
Police remind consumers never to give out any personal or financial information to anyone who contacts them via telephone or email asking for information.
Most financial institutions have a live operator who customers can speak with.
Police recommended that anyone who receives one of these phone scam calls to hang up and contact their financial institution or debit/credit card issuer directly.
