But the bill isn’t as high as it could be at the Madison County Detention Center.
They’ve hired a nurse to help.
The jailer said there used to be five to six inmates sent to the hospital every day, many for drugs.
That resulted in huge medical bills for the jail, which taxpayers picked up.
Now, with a nurse on staff, inmates can be helped at the jail instead of making a costly trip to the hospital.
"So many people were coming in with withdrawals and they would tell us.. Well I’m gonna withdraw tomorrow; I’m gonna withdraw this evening; I’ve done heroin, I’ve done percocets or whatever," said Madison County Jailer Doug Thomas.
