Kentucky will see a surge in the number of addicts eligible for health insurance in January when the Affordable Care Act takes effect, potentially worsening the state’s inadequate number of treatment and recovery centers.

The Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration said when the Affordable Care Act kicks in, 31,000 addicts will become eligible for insurance.

The state said around 280,000 Kentuckians, or 8 percent of the state, already need treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, and around 31,000 are currently receiving treatment.
