Carson, CA (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Galaxy announced Thursday that the club has agreed to a multi-year Designated Player contract with defender Omar Gonzalez.

The new deal makes Gonzalez the Galaxy's third Designated Player, joining Landon Donovan and club captain Robbie Keane, and the first defender to sign such a contract with the organization.

"To be the first Galaxy and U.S. defender to be named as a Designated Player is a great honor for me," said Gonzalez. "The Galaxy are the premier club in MLS and I'm looking forward to growing as a professional in L.A. while working towards winning a third consecutive MLS Cup."

Gonzalez, the 2011 MLS Defender of the Year and 2012 MLS Cup MVP, joined the Galaxy in 2009 when he was picked by the club with the third overall selection in the MLS SuperDraft. The 24-year-old has appeared in 119 regular season games since joining Los Angeles and has established himself in the U.S. national team squad, earning 10 of his 12 caps in 2013.

Per club and league policy, details of the contract were not disclosed.
