Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Clint Dempsey was named the 2012 U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year on Monday, marking the third time he has won the award.

Dempsey also received the honor in 2007 and 2011, joining goalkeeper Kasey Keller as the only other three-time winner, while Landon Donovan has captured the award four times.

The Tottenham forward led U.S. players with six goals in 2012, including five in the semifinal round of World Cup qualifying.

Dempsey's other goal came in a historic 1-0 win at Italy in a friendly in February, taking his career total to 30 goals, which ties Brian McBride for third on the all-time U.S. list.
