Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Panthers placed offensive lineman Jeff Byers on injured reserve Tuesday with a foot injury.

Byers was the Panthers' primary backup at center and guard and played in all eight games this season. He started seven of the 14 games he played in last season after spending the previous year on the team's practice squad.

Carolina signed offensive linemen Geoff Hangartner to replace Byers . Hangartner, in his eighth NFL season, has started 83 of the 110 games he has played during his career.

This is Hangartner's third stint with the Panthers, having been drafted by Carolina in the fifth round in 2005. He started 28 times for the team over the past two seasons, but was released during training camp.
