Englewood, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Denver Broncos have named defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio interim head coach while John Fox is out.

The Broncos announced the move Monday morning with Fox expected to miss several weeks as he recovers from an aortic heart valve replacement.

Fox was taken by ambulance to a Charlotte, N.C.-area hospital Saturday after complaining of lightheadedness during a golf outing. He had surgery Monday and is in recovery.

"Our main concern is the well-being of John Fox and getting him healthy," Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway said.

Denver has gotten off to a 7-1 start in 2013 and currently sits second in the AFC West standings.

Del Rio spent nine years as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003-11. He went 68-71 at the helm in Jacksonville (2003-2011), but the team failed to post a winning record in each of his last four seasons.

Del Rio, who joined the Broncos in 2012, will also continue his role as the team's defensive coordinator.

"I've been a head coach and a (defensive) playcaller before. The way we're situated now, that's the best way to go forward," Del Rio said.

The Broncos, who are coming off a bye, play at San Diego on Sunday.
