Redskins exercise fifth-year option on Kerrigan

Ashburn, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Redskins have exercised their fifth-year option on the contract of linebacker Ryan Kerrigan.

Kerrigan had a career-high 66 tackles, 8 1/2 sacks and three passes defensed in 16 games last season.

The 25-year-old Kerrigan has started all 48 of Washington's regular-season games and one playoff game since the team selected him with the 16th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He was a 2012 Pro Bowl selection.

In three seasons, the Purdue product has recorded 183 tackles, 24 1/2 sacks, 15 passes defensed, 10 fumbles forced, two interceptions (both returned for touchdowns) and one fumble recovery.
