Ashburn, VA ( - The Washington Redskins announced Tuesday that defensive end Stephen Bowen's season is over, and placed him on injured reserve.

Bowen, who last played in a 24-16 loss to the Eagles on Nov. 17, has damaged cartilage in his right knee and may have to undergo microfracture surgery. He had injured his posterior cruciate ligament in that same knee earlier in the season but played through the issue.

"Anytime you lose a guy like Stephen, it's a big blow to your football team," said Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. "It's hard to lose a guy with his play and his character."

Bowen completed his 2013 campaign with 19 tackles in 10 games.

Washington also signed wideout Josh Bellamy to the active roster and cornerback Peyton Thompson to the practice squad, waived cornerback Jerome Murphy.
