Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco 49ers have signed running back Alfonso Smith to a one-year contract.

Smith will help a depleted running back corps that has already lost Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James in training camp.

Hunter suffered a torn ACL last week and will likely be out for the season. James left practice this past weekend with an arm injury, reported to be a dislocated left elbow that could keep him out for the entire preseason.

Smith spent four seasons with Arizona after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He has 156 yards and two touchdowns on 48 carries over 43 games, and added 13 special teams tackles.

In 16 games with the Cardinals last year, Smith carried the ball 18 times for 54 yards with a score and chipped in six tackles on special teams.

The 49ers opened a roster spot by waiving guard Fouimalo Fonoti.
