(SportsNetwork.com) - San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was named the 2013 Comeback Player of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America.

Rivers bounced back from his first losing season as an NFL quarterback to guide the Chargers back to the AFC playoffs. The Chargers were 7-9 in 2012 and won their final four games of the regular season to sneak into the playoffs as the sixth seed.

San Diego then beat the Bengals in Cincinnati on wild card weekend before falling at Denver in the divisional round.

Rivers improved his completion percentage to an NFL-best 69.5 percent this season, throwing for 4,478 yards with 32 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions.

Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery was selected as the PFWA's Most Improved Player. He started just six games because of injury during his rookie campaign of 2012, totaling just 24 catches for 367 yards with three touchdowns. This year, he compiled 89 receptions for 1,421 yards with seven scores.
