Orchard Park, NY (Sports Network) - Buffalo Bills rookie EJ Manuel will be the starting quarterback for Sunday's season opener against New England.

Manuel's status for Week 1 was in question after he underwent left knee surgery in mid-August. He played the first two preseason games before having the minor procedure.

According to the club's website, Manuel returned to practice on Sunday and passed a number of tests over the past two days, allowing Bills coach Doug Marrone to make the decision.

"When he first came back ... he looked pretty good," said Marrone on Wednesday, adding that there was no further risk of injury. "I started to feel this was the way we were going."

The 23-year-old Florida State product completed 26-of-33 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns in his limited action during the preseason.

"I felt like I was ready to go a few days ago," said Manuel on Wednesday.

Buffalo selected Manuel with the 16th overall pick in April's draft.

The Bills had considered starting undrafted rookie free agent Jeff Tuel if Manuel wasn't ready.
