Orchard Park, NY (Sports Network) - The Buffalo Bills have named Doug Whaley their new general manager.

Whaley, the Bills' assistant general manager since February 2010, will take over for Buddy Nix, who stepped down on Monday and decided to remain with the organization as a special assistant.

"Doug has been involved in every level of player personnel throughout his career and he will lead our efforts in re-establishing a winning tradition for this organization and our great fans," said Bills president and CEO Russ Brandon. "Doug is a passionate and committed leader who will work tirelessly with his department to build a team our fans and all of Western New York will be proud of heading into the future."

Whaley spent 11 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, including his last 10 as the team's pro scouting coordinator, before joining the Bills. He was also a scout for the Seattle Seahawks for three years.

The Bills also named Jim Monos director of player personnel and Kelvin Fisher director of college scouting.
